Seven of the Month - December 2010

This seven is a seven of faith from Bishop Edgley's conference talk in reference to Alma 32:27-28 . 1 Awake 2 Arouse your faculties 3 Experiment upon my words 4 Exercise a particle of faith 5 Desire to believe 6 Work 7 Plant (make place for the word)

The Process of Creating a Functional Prototype

One of my coworkers gave a marketing presentation about a year ago. For his presentation he researched the topic of prototyping from various sources. He decided to gather the ideas and concepts of his research into steps to make it easier to understand. And as you may have guessed since I'm presenting it here - there are seven steps to the prototyping process. Functional Prototyping Series: Steps in Creating a Functional Prototype : 1) Paper to Software Design 2) User Interface 3) Virtual Prototyping 4) Adding Hardware 5) Algorithm Engineering 6) Instrumenting and Testing 7) Deployment First of all, I must say that I was amazed that someone not intending to make a seven structure, could do so well at discovering a set of seven that imitates the creation process so well in both order and completeness. He stated in his presentation that steps two through six have the ability to circle around, not necessarily sticking to that order, until the creator feels that it is suffi...

The Process of Repentance (Revisited)

This post is not replacing the previous post on The Process of Repentance . The intention of this post is to rewrite the process as an alliteration. I was in Sunday School a few months ago and the teacher asked me to list the steps in the process of repentance. This was an easy question because I have it memorized. But as I was thinking I wondered if I could write the process with only words that start with 'R'. I found that I was able to do this. Here is the result: 1 Recognize - Recognition of sin 2 Regret - Sorrow for sin 3 Remove - Abandonment of sin 4 Report - Confession of sin 5 Restore - Restitution for sin 6 Replace - Obedience to all the commandments 7 Remit - Forgiveness for sin The only thing that I want to touch on here is going back to my post on Remission . Remission is only brought about through baptism by proper authority. Baptism is symbolic of Christ and his atoning sacrifice. So, remission is a result of baptism and can only be brought about through...

Seven of the Month - November 2010

As I was reviewing last April's General Conference, I listened to Elder Eyring's talk called Act in All Diligence . At the end of his talk I noticed that he gave some counsel, or in other words commandments, which sounded like a list. As I reviewed it I noticed that there were seven elements to the list, and I came to notice that this list of seven elements fits perfectly into the seven structure that I have all over my blog. So here is the counsel. I hope all of you will consider this counsel as a commandment and follow it as such. Counsel to the Lord’s Priesthood Servants 1) Ponder deeply and diligently in the scriptures and in the words of living prophets. 2) Persist in prayer for the Holy Ghost to reveal to you the nature of God the Father and His Beloved Son. 3) Plead that the Spirit will show you what the Lord wants you to do. 4) Plan to do it. 5) Promise Him to obey. 6) Act with determination until you have done what He asked. 7) And then pray to give thanks fo...

If I had a Million Dollars

Fairly often I think about what I would do if I had a million dollars. That turns into the question - What would I do if I never had to worry about money again in my life? - My answer is very different than most people I ask about this. Trying to get away from this train of thought was not helped when I received the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack for Christmas. Last week an email made it past the spam blockers, and it sounded like a scam. I decided that if it was real I shouldn't pass it up. It stated that I was a winner of an MS-Word lottery for 1.9M dollars. I decided to set up a bank account with only one dollar in it so they could not steal more than a dollar from me. Then my mind started wondering again - What would I do with the money if I had 1.9M dollars? First, I know that the government would take about 28% or more. So, I would be left with a little more than a million dollars. I googled to find out what the internet suggested for lottery winners of more than $50,00...

Seven of the Month - June 2010

I found this set of seven in my scripture reading this morning: 3 Nephi 5:14 1 And it hath become expedient that I 2   according to the will of God 3     that the prayers of those who have gone hence 4       who were the holy ones 5     should be fulfilled 6   according to their faith 7 should write a record of these things which have been done. I almost didn't see it because of the faulty punctuation but here it is. I noticed that 1 and 7 make the basic sentence. Also, 3 and 5 connect. That is todays seven.

Why Many Forms of Exercise Don't Work Very Well

Image
Over the past six months, or so, I've been going to a chiropractor to reverse my scoliosis (see a future post about this). He wrote an article in his May newsletter that I really liked. The author is Dr. Daniel Gonzalez: "As many of you know, I have been an exercise fanatic for the last 42 years. Life is a journey and I certainly made a load of well intentioned mistakes over those years. It is my goal to help you understand some of those mistakes so you don't have to make the same ones I did. My major mistake was that I focused nearly exclusively on cardio. I focused on running and actually did fairly well competing as I ran a 2:50 marathon and a sub 5:00 minute mile. However, even though I was aerobically fit, I virtually ignored anaerobic training after I stopped competing 25 years ago. [It] turns out, that is what most people do. They stop doing speed work when they get older. Most exercise works just fine for most people so long as they are under 30 years old. At t...

Remission

Remission is the act of reducing the intensity or degree, or of putting aside, of punishments, debts, penalties or obligations for misdeeds upon conditions and for a period of time. If the conditions are not met all punishments, debts, penalties and obligations are reinstated; otherwise, they are removed permanently. For cancer or other disease, punishments are equivalent to symptoms, debts to deficiencies, penalties to effects and misdeeds to cancer or other disease. The problem is that most people don't know the conditions or the period of time. As for the Gospel of Jesus Christ the misdeeds are sins and the act is baptism; thus the phrase, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins. Sins are the breaking of God's laws which have a punishment affixed. This baptism has two parts but is one baptism. When the term immersion is used it is typically understood to be immersion in water and this is correct, but not complete. The immersion also must apply to the fire, the fire of...
